All-Female Spacewalk to Happen on October 21

An all-female spacewalk is set to finally happen on October 21, NASA confirms.

According to reports, female astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir have been identified to do the routine checks this month. In particular, NASA states that the upcoming spacewalks serve as routine checks on the exterior of the International Space Station. Moreover, the female astronauts would be replacing solar array batteries and upgrading them to lithium-ion batteries.

In a press report by Space, they mention that:

Although astronauts and cosmonauts have completed more than 200 spacewalks for the construction and maintenance of the International Space Station, only 15 women have ever been on a spacewalk, and they have always been accompanied by men. NASA had originally planned to have the first all-female spacewalk in March, but that plan fell apart due to a lack of properly fitted spacesuits a lack of properly fitted spacesuits

NASA postpones an All-Female Spacewalk in March

Conversely, NASA postponed an all-female spacewalk in March. Apparently, due to an issue regarding the suit, the all-female spacewalk did not happen. Although, a spacewalk did happen. Only, it’s not all-female. Astronaut Nick Hauge joined Christina Koch in March.

As a result of changing metabolism and digestion in space, the spacesuit originally designed for one of the female astronauts did not fit. This prompted NASA to postpone the event and ensure the safety of the crew.

Fortunately, NASA upped multiple suits to ensure that the walk would finally happen this time around.

Christina Koch figures as one of the most experienced female astronauts of NASA right now. And NASA locked her in for three separate spacewalks this October alone. Koch arrived at the International Space Station on March 14 for her first spaceflight mission. Subsequently, she remains on the station until February 2020. In essence, Koch becomes the woman with the longest single spaceflight ever.
