A baby in Iraq has three penises, a first case reported in medical history.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the Kurdish baby from Duhok is the first documented human with triphallia. This means that he is born with three penises.

This case is revealed in a study of Dr. Shakir Saleem Jamali now published in the academic periodical the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports.

Doctors said his parents discovered “two skin projections” at the base of his scrotum. Alarmed about the bizarre body part, they immediately took him to the hospital which later on brought surprise among attending physicians.

Meanwhile, the doctors said one penis measured 2cm while the other was 1cm. They said only one of the penises had a head.

However, the doctors said only the child’s main penis was functioning, so the doctors removed the excess penises.

“Triphallia (three penises) is an unreported condition in humans until now,” Dr. Jamali said in the study.

“Patients with supernumerary penises have unique presentations and no cases are identical. Treatment is difficult because it poses medical, ethical, and cosmetic aspects.”

Meanwhile, diphallia, a condition where a child is born with two penises, affects one in six million boys. Its first case occurred in 1609 as reported by Swiss doctor Johannes Jacob Wecker when he analyzed a cadaver.

Since the first incident, only about 1,000 cases have been reported globally. Nevertheless, experts said the condition is not a danger in itself, but can lead to health complications.
