A cat detained at the main prison in Sri Lanka escaped in early August this year. The cat allegedly smuggled heroin and cellphone sim cards.

According to the Daily Mail report, jail intelligence officials put the feline at the high-security Welikada Prison.

Police said they found nearly two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip in a small plastic bag tied around the cat’s neck.

However, the cat escaped a day after the police brought it in prison. Nevertheless, there were still no immediate comment from prison authorities.

The cat scampered out of its holding room. It then immediately escaped through a fence when prison guards came in to feed it.

Meanwhile, authorities said there were an increase in incidents of people throwing small packets over the walls in recent weeks. These include drugs, cellphones, and phone chargers.

While there are no measures arresting animals in Sri Lanka, police hope the cat could lead them to the smugglers’ den.

Currently, the country is battling a major drug problem with some anti-narcotics detectives also implicated in selling confiscated drugs.

Further, the police in late July seized an eagle allegedly used by drug traffickers to distribute narcotics in a suburb of Colombo.

The menagerie of accomplices was associated with the underworld crime boss Angoda Lokka.
