A zoo in Central China raised eyebrows in early March this week as it tried to pass a dog as a wolf as the beast “died of old age.”

In a viral video, a Rottweiler rests in the “wolf” enclosure at Xiangwushan Zoo in Xianning, Hubei province. The zoo seemed to be trying to pass a dog as a wolf even though both animals have very distinct features that are easy to notice.

Mr. Xu, who posted the short clip, captioned it as: “Woof! Are you a wolf?”

During his interview with Beijing News, the uploader said the zoo staff told him that a wolf used to live in that cage but “died of old age.” Meanwhile, a staff member confirmed that the dog will be in the cage temporarily.

However, a news outlet reported that the zoo had been financially struggling, saying it “didn’t have enough visitors to keep the zoo up and running well.”

The zoo charges 15 yuan ($2.30) to take care of the animals, including lions and tigers. However, a local forestry bureau already told the management to remove the sign, leading to the enclosure.

Meanwhile, the video sparked heated debates on China’s Twitter-like service Weibo.

“At least get a husky,” one user commented, noting that the breed would somehow pass off as a wolf.

Another user said she was “shocked” to see any animal kept in such a cage. Meanwhile, others called for the zoo to just shut down if it can’t afford to maintain the zoo.”
