CLIMATE CRISIS: The Earth at its Tipping Point

Due to the Earth’s climate crisis, we may be facing the tipping point at this very moment, researchers say. They called for urgent action to avoid “an existential threat to civilization.”

The group of researchers, who published a commentary in the journal Nature, say that we are now in a “state of planetary emergency”. Because of the growing evidence and that suggests some irreversible changes to the Earth’s environmental systems.

A global tipping point is what we call for the planet’s systems to go to the point of no return. As the loss of the Amazon rainforest and the fast-melting ice, these are just some of the evidence we have today. Said by the commentary.

Such events could lead to  “hothouse” conditions where some places are going to be inhabitable.

The authors said,

We argue that the intervention time left to prevent tipping could already have shrunk towards zero, whereas the reaction time to achieve net-zero emissions is 30 years at best.

A team led by Timothy Lenton. He is a professor of climate change and Earth system science at the University of Exeter, in southwest England. They identified nine areas where they say that the tipping point is already on its way.

Those include the destruction of the Amazon rainforest, reduction of the Arctic sea ice, melting of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice. These are just some of the areas already experiencing a tipping point.
