Coffin punishment for mask violators was introduced in Indonesia’s capital in early September this year with the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

According to a Khaleej Times report, Jakarta authorities came up with a “deadly punishment” for people who refuse to wear masks specifically in public areas. Violators will have to lay inside the coffin so that they can “contemplate about their actions.”

The report says violators must count until 100 while on display for passerby to take photos. Budhy Novian, head of the East Jakarta Public Order Agency, said this will give people a strong message if they risk not wearing face masks specifically in public areas.

According to a Gubernatorial Regulation (Pergub), people who will not wear face masks face IDR250K (US$16.90) fine. They also have an option to render 60 minutes of community service.

Authorities initially introduced the coffin punishment in Pasar Rebo in East Jakarta. Later on, Mr. Novian said they will recommend for its enforcement city-wide should the violators of the said case continue to rise.

Nevertheless, Jakarta is not the only city in the country to implement the coffin obsession. Several municipalities and districts already erected mini coffin monuments, featuring the area’s caseload and death rate data. They aim to remind the public about how deadly COVID-19 can be.
