Head of the world’s largest family dies in India’s northeastern state of Mizoram.

Ziona Chana is also the head of a religious sect called Chana Pawl which practices polygamy. He died at the age of 76 in mid-June this year, leaving behind 38 wives, 89 children, and 36 grandchildren.

On Twitter, Mizoram’s chief minister confirmed the news with the caption “with a heavy heart.” Reports said Mr. Chana succumbed to diabetes and hypertension.

Local reports named him as the head of the world’s largest family but it’s still unclear if it’s confirmed by a global institution.

Further, reports said he was born in 1945 and met his oldest  wife when he was still 17.He heads Chana Pawl which encourages male members to practice polygamy and live communally. The group believes Jesus will return after 1,000 years, based on Chapter 20 of Bible’s Revalations.

His family lives together in a four-story house called “Chuuar Than Run” or New Generations House, which holds 100 rooms. Meanwhile. his wives live in a dormitory near his private room. His house itself is a huge attraction in the state.

In his 2011 interview with Reuters,  he said he will do anything just to marry someone. “I have so many people to care (for) and look after, and I consider myself a lucky man,” he said.
