Households in different parts of Japan reportedly received unsolicited packages of seeds. The parcels marked as coming from China, with similar incidents happened in the US and Britain.

According to a Kyodo News article, Japanese authorities on August 3 warned citizens of the potential scam. They advised the public to not plant the seeds as they may be infected with a virus, bacteria or pest.

The advisory came shortly after receiving multiple calls from citizens across the country to the consumer affairs centers and the agriculture ministry’s plant quarantine station.

In a statement from the National Consumer Affairs Center, the packages may be a scam used to trick receivers into paying the product. This can also be a “brushing scam.” It is when the seller poses as the receiver and posts false customer reviews online to boost product ratings.

The parcel comes in an envelope containing a plastic bag with around 100 brown seeds. The only detail from it is it comes from the Chinese city of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. Further, it said it contains jewels in English.

In a separate incident, the US Department of Agriculture in late July is currently investigating the incident. In addition, they asked citizens to contact local agricultural officials upon receiving a similar parcel.
