According to the South China Morning Post, the man, identified by his surname Sun, ate five live frogs after his neighbors told him it would make him stronger.

Later on, his family brought him to the nearest hospital after developing a high fever and experiencing weakess.

The First Affiliated Hospital of College of Medicine of Zhejiang University said on its WeChat said he was infected with Spirometra mansoni, a tapeworm commonly found in frogs.

Mr. Sun works in the fields of Yuhang District of Hangzhou. He then decided to try out a folk remedy of wanting to further improve his fitness after breaking collarbone and shoulder blade several years back.

“I caught five frogs in total and they were all quite small, about a thumb’s length each,” the 53-year-old man said.

He earlier went to three hospitals to find the cause of his persistent fever. He didn’t realize that eating live frogs might be the cause, so he didn’t disclose it to the doctors.

Doctors said he suffered from high fever for about two weeks. His lungs also show multiple lesions and fibrosis.

Fortunately, the worms found in his body haven’t reached yet his eyes and brain. If that happened, doctors said he may suffer from a stroke.
