During the Miss Grand International Pageant, Miss Grand Myanmar asked international organizations to intercede in the ongoing situation in Myanmar.

“Myanmar citizens cannot do anything. They can’t stop the military,” the beauty queen said as she bravely expressed concern to her fellow citizens. “Right now we are calling for help from the international community, we need the UN to help very urgently.”

However, she also requested to stay longer in Thailand. She said something bad might happen to her when returns to her country due to her speech. Reports said that citizens caught speaking ill of the Myanmar military are said to be put in prison.

Following Ms. Lay’s speech, the Miss Grand International Organization has offered to financially support Ms. Han for the next three months. They will also help her apply for a work permit on her behalf.

Meanwhile, Miss Grand Myanmar may also be eligible to apply for refugee status in Thailand.

Last February 1, Myanmar declared a state of emergency. This was one day before democratically elected State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi to assume leadership. Myanmar’s military entity, the Tatmadaw caused the insurgency, saying the National League of Democracy (NLD) victory is invalid.
