The boss of a restaurant in New York revealed that his staff mistook a £1,525 Rothschild for a £13 bottle of wine.

According to tabloid newspaper The Daily Mirror, he ended up with an eye-watering bill of his own.

Keith McNally said the very expensive mistake occurred at his brasserie Balthazar in Manhattan.

A staff accidentally delivered the pricey bottle to a couple after they ordered a £13 bottle of Pinot Noir.

He then delivered the couple’s bottle of cheap wine to a table of Wall Street businessmen.

McNally admitted that he faced a “dilemma” – admit the mistake or let the businessmen continue to enjoy the cheap plonk.

“I decided to veer from my normal behavior, and tell both parties the truth,” the legendary restaurateur said.

According to various reports online, the plastic dinner set had a rude word printed on them.

It turned out that the mother had accidentally ordered a French version of the plate set.
