The Satanic Temple encourages high school students to pursue higher education by offering scholarship under the program of Devil’s Advocate.

The organization claims it seeks separation between religion and public affairs.

According to the CNN report, it will provide $500 for those who will get the scholarship. Meanwhile, the scholarship period opened last July 21. As of the writing, the organization already 50 applications.

Applicants must submit a creative response about “individualism, free-thought, empathy.” In addition, Submissions can be in the form of either an essay, poem, work of art or film.

Satanic Temple also seek applicants to answer the two main questions: how to promote the temple’s tenets and mission; and also, describe the teacher who “crushed your spirit, undermined your self-confidence.”

Malcolm Jarry, the organization’s co-founder, said during the CNN interview that the project started when a high school student e-mailed the organization for a recommendation letter for a religious scholarship.

“I was disappointed that she did not receive the scholarship,” Mr. Jarry said. “I that moment as an opportunity to offer our own scholarship that reflects our values.”

Satanic Temple is based on Salem, Massachusetts. Its mission is to “encourage benevolence and empathy among all people.”

Further, members believe Satan is a “literary construct,” not an actual being.
