Scientists warned TikTok users against the dangerous trend circulating in the platform of deep frying water. They said it could lead to “fiery explosions.”

The trend includes combining wter with calcium alginate to shape water into a sphere. Users then coat it using flour, egg, and breadcrumbs. Later on, they drop it into a fryer.

However, scientists explained that calcium alginate membrane splits; when it leaks into the hot oil, it may lead into an explosion causing a tragedy.

One case is the footage posted by TikTok user @trendychef_, showing the various processes on deep frying water.

Meanwhile, Dr. Christopher Fellow of the American Chemical Society, told the Daily Mail that the trend is “somewhere between insane and suicidal.”

He further explained that the exposed breading fries quickly, while the heat works its way inward to a cooler center; the problem is that hot oil in a deep fat fryer is much hotter than the boiling point of water.

“Water boils (turns into the gas we call steam) at 212°F [100°C],” he told the media outlet. “And, when that happens, it will expand in volume by about 1,500 times.”

He also said this is the reason putting frozen food with higher water content into hot oil should be avoided.
