Tesla will continue to set up a data center in mainland China. This is despite receiving backlash from users and officials that this may be used for spying.

In March, the Chinese government restricted officials from using Tesla. They believe images from cameras on the vehicles may be sent in the US.

Months later, the electric vehicle giant clarified that it won’t be used for any espionage attempts. It also decided to set up a data center in the mainland.

We have set up a data centre in China to locally store data (collected by Tesla vehicles sold in mainland China) and we will add more,” the company said on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like service platform.

Nevertheless, the company ensures the public it will make data security as its priority.

Reports said Elon Musk successfully penetrated China after getting a rare permission to build a factory in Shanghai, the country’s fin tech hub. The effort also allows the country to further mobilize and expand its huge electric car market. It sells one of every four cars in the country.
