On Thursday, Business Insider Australia reported Irish sea moss existed as a form of alternative medicine for centuries.

Irish sea moss consumption for healing originates in many parts of Ireland and Jamaica.

“You’ll start to cough up a lot of phlegm, which is okay,” Naomi Maldonado said in a TikTok video.

“It’s a good thing because you’re clearing out all that stuff that doesn’t belong in your lungs,” she continued.

Maldonado currently has 44,000 followers and became one of the many personalities to promote ingesting raw Irish sea moss.

Like her many counterparts, she argues that consumption of the red algae results in a plethora of health benefits.

“You’re gonna be able to breathe so much better,” she said.

In another report, health magazine Shape explained that Irish sea moss historically used as a homeopathic remedy.

However, scientific evidence to support the claims aired on TikTok remains absent.

“The shorelines where Irish moss grows are not certified clean of these toxic metals, or petrol products, or pesticides and herbicides,” Lisa Borg told Byrdie.

“And for this reason, I would only suggest using certified organic Irish moss,” continued the UK-based nutritionist.

According to the International Food Additives Council, Irish sea moss became crucial to the Irish in the 1800s.

Aside from harvesting and eating sea moss for 14,000 years, it also supplemented people’s diets during the potato famine.

Afterward, Irish sea moss made its way to Jamaica as an instrument to alleviate colds and lung diseases.
