A young Japanese woman employee received administrative punishment after putting partition between her and her table neighbor who is an older male employee.

According to Sora News 24, the woman, who is in her 20s, went to the office earlier than usual to do some remodelling in their workspace. She then put a black cardboard, putting a divide between her and her table neighbor.

The report described the partition to be about 40 centimeters (15.7 inches) tall and 50 centimeters long; it is large enough so that the two of them couldn’t see each other if seated.

When the man, who is in his 50s, saw the new look of their workspace, the man felt offended. Thought he felt bullied, he just went home instead of going to work.

Since the incident happened last October 16, the man didn’t return to work yet. He was then diagnosed with adjustment disorder and is currently on sick leave.

Realizing what happened, the city hall administration in Kagoshima Prefecture where they are working said the woman’s actions are “inappropriate.”

When the staff asked the young employee about her reason for putting up the partition, she said: “Working with him has been a recurring source of stress. I just couldn’t take it anymore, and I put up the barrier without being really conscious of doing so.”
